I’ve been fascinated by the lizard master race Illuminati conspiracy theory for some time now. There’s been some intelligent writing about it, but too often it’s the post-mod, hip-ly ironic, pop culture critique type of comedy that misses the mark by going for the easy joke. I’m more interested in parsing the glaring archetypes and elements of the mythology common to most folklores. This one has the secret cabal of world leaders participating in ritual human sacrifice, in order to consume the human blood they need to retain their human shapes (thus insuring their lock on power).
Hmm, shape shifters (in capes!) with super powers (from God, superior alien technology), drinking blood ritualistically, prefer infants (innocents, virgins, same diff). Sounds like vampires. Or Catholic Mass with a twist. Yawn. Not so wacky. Then there’s the ‘ancient aliens mixing their DNA with humanity to produce cross-breeds’ angle. This one is a mix of the ‘forgotten lost knowledge’ theme and a general hyper-xenophobia about them damn elitist foreigners mixing with us covertly in order to manipulate our society for their whims. Sounds a lot like the ‘ancient aliens’ religions, like Scientology, inspired by the wishful thinking of Erich Von Daniken which in turn was inspired by the fiction of H.P Lovecraft.
The old saying is true: I can’t make this stuff up. Because it’s as old as the oldest stories we know. It just gets mashed up and spun around a bit in the mass media culture machine. Mix in a little repressed anti-semitism, racism, or just some garden variety psychosis, which resurfaces in the consciousness of someone who is dying to believe the world could not possibly be as mundane as reality insists, and Voila! New myths to believe in. Lather, rinse, repeat.
